5 Reasons to have a Personal Coach

“ Thinking is a very dangerous activity, as you never know what you might find”the character Lady Violet from the TV series Downton Abbey

Lady Violet is a wise, sharp and funny woman. Her words have a lot of reason to be. And as co-author of the chapter on Individual Coaching in the Book “Coaching: ir mais longe cá dentro” ed. ICF Portugal, to be launched on 17 May 2016, I have tried to find the reasons that are most important to me for seeking a Coach. So far I can think of five:

  1. Thinking without danger

If thinking is a dangerous activity, it is better to do it accompanied than alone. And this danger stimulates those who like challenges, unforeseen adventures and destinations that are sometimes imponderable from the outset.

  1. Gain motivation

Relevant and realistic goals and objectives give a sense of purpose that drives us to act and persist, and another energy to do or “be”.

  1. Access intuition

Intuition allows us to know without the foundation of logic. Reason helps to structure intuitions and “harness” them in our favour, with a development of emotional literacy.

  1. Dealing with the Narcissus that dwells in me

The Myth of Narcissus, who drowned in the beauty of his own image in the lake, reminds us like all the gods of classical mythology, of our defects and qualities in an exacerbated way, and how we need the mirror of another, who in a professional way, dances with us to the music of thoughts and actions, and is the advocate of our best and desired Self.

“I am the master of my destiny. I am the captain of my soul”

 William Ernest Henley

  1. Piloting “my destiny”

I have a plan that rests comfortably in my imagination. In this I have a real, successful winning nature, or opposite. I lack the persistence or motivation to put it into practice in order to deal with all potential adversities or impossibilities. A path accompanied by a coach becomes shorter and more enjoyable, recalling the words of the poet:

“When man dreams, God wants, the work is born.”

adap. de Fernando Pessoa
